Peasant farmers association of Ghana raise concern over Genetically Modified Organisms seeds (GMOs) commercialization in Dambai

The peasant farmers association of Ghana has urged farmers to reject the planting of genetically modified organisms seeds imported into the Ghanaian market on their farmlands.

According to the association, GMOs were aligned to indigenous culture and injurious to health, hence not the solution to problems bedeviling Ghana’s agriculture.

Executive director of peasant farmer’s association of Ghana Mr. Bismark Owusu Nortey gave an advice to farmer’s at a stakeholders engagement organized in Dambai in Krachi East of the Oti Region.

He reminded farmers of agroecology and food sovereignty, it was an imperfect science without the full knowledge of it’s impact which would uterly contaminate organic and natural varieties through cross pollination and make them sterile.

The stakeholders engagement aimed at awareness creation and knowledge sharing on GMOs.

Mr . Nortey said, the association will champion awareness on why farmers must not plant such seeds adding that, agroecology practices in farming are the way to go if Ghana wants to safeguard the health of the people.

He finally assured farmers of their readiness to supply them with traditional seedlings for planting and also create ready market for their produce.

Madam Elizabeth Akofah and a few others shared their experiences on the old system of farming and expressed joy on the need to say no GMOs.
